To start the goal-based investing process, you must first decide your financial goals / destination. Even if you have a general idea of your goals, such as retirement, a trip to your favourite destination, children’s education, etc., you’ll end up going around in circles unless you have a goal to work for. For example to commute, we select a vehicle based on the distance to the destination; like,
if the distance is between 10 and 50 Kms, you use a motorcycle/car; (short- Low speed vehicle)
if the distance is between 100 and 300 Kms, you use a car or train; (medium – Moderate speed vehicle)
if the distance is between 500 and 1000 Kms, we will prefer train/flight; (long-aggressive speed vehicle)
and if the distance is above 1000 Kms, we will almost certainly choose flight. (long-aggressive speed vehicle)
As a traveller, you select a vehicle depending on distance and destination; similarly, you must select investment options/vehicles based on your goals. If you plan ahead of time, you will have a much easier time achieving your goals. The rest will fall into place if you know what you want and when you want it. Basically a goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.
